About This Course

This course explores the central debates of Black political thought from slavery to the present. Students will encounter major figures including Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and Toni Morrison. Each thinker is placed in the historical context that shaped their arguments about freedom, justice, democracy, and resistance.

Class sessions emphasize active debate and dialogue, giving students the chance to inhabit and contest competing visions of liberation. By the end of the course, you will understand how these enduring arguments continue to shape contemporary struggles over race and democracy.
